Japan is composed of four major and over 400 other inhabited islands. Sea communications  and resources, plus inland river connections, were essential to the life of the country at a time when land travel was uneasy. As a consequence, Ukiyo-e artists produced many prints of scenes with all kinds of boats. Their inspiration was enriched in the Meiji era by the wide opening of Japan to foreign ships…
